Car Monthly Cost Calculator

Estimate more than fuel or charging. Convert annual vehicle tax, insurance, maintenance, inspections, tires and everyday costs into a monthly ownership view, then compare operating cost, cost per kilometer and monthly cash outflow including finance payments.

Vehicle cost inputs

Monthly distance, consumption and energy price are required. Complete the other fields only when they apply to you.

Annual expenses are divided by 12, inspection cost by the interval you choose, and tire cost by the estimated tire life in kilometers.

Quick examples

How is monthly vehicle cost calculated?

Fuel or charging alone rarely reflects the full recurring cost of using a vehicle. This calculator adds vehicle tax, insurance, maintenance, inspections, tire wear, parking, tolls and any other recurring costs you enter.

Monthly operating & ownership cost = energy + monthly share of annual costs + inspection share + tire wear + other monthly costs + optional battery reserve

The loan or finance payment is kept separate because its principal portion is not simply a consumed operating expense. The calculator therefore reports monthly cash outflow including finance as a second result.

How is cost per kilometer calculated?

Monthly operating and ownership cost before finance is divided by monthly distance. This is useful for comparing usage levels, but because depreciation is excluded it is not a complete economic cost per kilometer.

Cost per kilometer = monthly operating & ownership cost before finance Γ· monthly distance

How does the EV battery reserve work?

Battery replacement is not a fixed monthly bill, so the reserve is off by default. If enabled, the tool spreads the replacement-cost assumption across the estimated battery life.

If both distance and calendar life are entered, the earlier expected threshold is used. For example, if the distance limit would be reached in 6 years but calendar life is 8 years, the reserve is spread across 6 years. This is only a planning assumption.

What is not included in this vehicle-cost estimate?

This page focuses on recurring usage and ownership costs. Purchase price, depreciation, opportunity cost of capital, loan principal/interest breakdown, unexpected major repairs and accident-related costs are not calculated automatically.

The result is therefore a monthly cost and cash-flow view based on the items you enter, not a complete economic total-cost-of-ownership figure.

Scenario analysis

After calculation, this table compares the current inputs with simple what-if scenarios such as a 10% higher energy price, 20% more monthly driving and the finance payment ending. These are mathematical scenarios, not forecasts or advice.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is monthly vehicle cost calculated?

The calculator adds the monthly share of annual and periodic costs, tire wear and other recurring costs to energy use. Finance payments are shown separately as cash outflow.

Why is the finance payment shown separately from the main cost?

The full payment is not a consumed operating expense; part of it may be principal financing the vehicle. The tool therefore separates operating cost from monthly cash outflow.

Is vehicle depreciation included?

No. This calculator does not estimate depreciation or the opportunity cost of capital.

Do I have to enable the battery reserve?

No. It is completely optional and intended only as a planning reserve.

How do I calculate cost per kilometer?

Monthly operating and ownership cost before finance is divided by monthly distance.

What is monthly income used for?

It is used only to show monthly cash outflow as a percentage of income; the calculator does not label the vehicle affordable or unaffordable.
