How are ovulation day and fertile window estimated?
Calendar estimation first projects the next period from your average cycle length, then places ovulation about 14 days before that date. This means ovulation is not always “cycle day 14”: it is around day 14 in a 28-day cycle but around day 18 in a 32-day cycle.
What is the fertile window?
ACOG notes that sperm can survive in the female reproductive tract for about five days and an egg can be fertilized for about 24 hours after ovulation. That is why the calculator shows a range rather than one “fertile day.”
Why are irregular cycles less predictable?
The calendar method assumes that your recent cycle pattern will continue. If cycle length varies substantially, the ovulation estimate can move as well. Illness, stress, breastfeeding, perimenopause and other factors can affect timing.
Important fertility and contraception limitation
